New Gay Sports Bar Coming to NYC

Boxers NYC is a new bar, set to open in late April. The 3,000 square foot bar will have 13 large-screen televisions, a brick oven, two levels and two bars. The first floor will include one of the bars and will also be used for local gay sports leagues to hold their meetings and gatherings. The second floor will include a 40-foot bar, two pool tables, electronic dart boards and a patio.
Boxers NYC plans to form a couple of darts or pool leagues and host tournaments. The large-screen televisions will be used to showcase statistical and event information from gay sports leagues in the area to share it with their customers.
Owner Ray Geerlof explained why he and his three partners decided to open Boxers NYC.
“Three of us played softball. On Saturdays, we didn’t have anyplace to go after our games. We would have to go eat [at one place] and then go to the bar if we went to a place on Christopher Street.”
Boxers NYC will be opening at the end of April at 37 W 20th St., right behind what used to be Limelight [the nightclub].
“What sets us apart is that we want to be more than just a bunch of TVs playing sports. We’re going grassroots with the community. We want to cater to the athletes, but we also want to cater to the athletic supporters,” said Ray.
Boxers NYC also plans to launch a line of boxers and jerseys, which will be available for purchase on the Web site by mid-May.
